OK, it's amazing what sleep deprivation and a car drive can do :-)
Well, Macbeemer gave some good advice (which I don't appear to be taking fully), but I think I have a plan.
Now, many of you seem to like this place, and I like it a lot, too (and disruption is not a cool thing), but I don't think the forums functionality/presentation/mechanism/UI/whatever is cutting it. So, that should get addressed. The rest of the stuff, however, this social networking portion, this part seems fine, if that's OK by you.
Now, what I suggest is that the forums move to a maccentralcafe.com address, under better forum software, more like what we're used to. the only weird thing is that i can't easily map maccentralcafe.com to two totally disparate/unique/whatever servers. this place would have to be maccentralcafe.ning.com and the forums would have to be a maccentralcafe.com address. but as far as primary navigation bar/widget/thingie, there wouldn't be any difference. if you look up near the address thing in your browser, you might notice a difference in the URLs. the backgrounds, look and feel, etc, will obviously be different between here and the forums (although I can mitigate that on the forums UI, so basically all you should notice is that one click is a social networking site with a similar appearance to a forum (or vice versa), and you might notice the subtle URL difference.
the part that i like? the new forums will be a lot faster and easier to setup than a new social networking CMS. i don't know what i was thinking, but it was bass ackwards. and the Ning subdomain bit isn't really that whacked out - that's a fairly common convention for domains to have their MySpace/whatever space/book subdomains. a social portal thing, spun off the original thing, and that has a good feel to it since this has been about MCF stuff, the forums. well, the news part was a big deal when that was thriving, but that was a definitely discrete thing from the forums. the forums were a whole other scene.
anyway, that's the update. don't hold your breath on the new forums, though. i'm outta town for several days with family in tow (well, the other way around), then have a wall with door that i have to erect quickly to accomodate a young student from Hamburg, Germany, attending college nearby. rather than a bedroom, i think he'd like better his own separate space (especially from our young daughters :-) in my studio, but i need to wall his quarters off so i don't disturb him with my nocturnal painting, with music playing, etc (i guess more softly, now) - he ends up with a nice space, sunny, roomy walk-in closet, his own private bathroom, wifi (no cable, though).
anyway, that's it. bye. have fun, and peace be with you all,
ed
